Oil Mining Process


Crude oil is an important fossil fuel that is found in different states worldwide. It is formed from the remains of flora and fauna, in other terms, plants, and animals that died a long time ago in oceans. The organisms sank underground into the mud and sand at the bottom of the ocean upon dying. Due to various chemical processes in the organisms, they are converted into organic material. The organic materials formed can be distilled by use of heat and pressure to form useful natural gas and crude oil. The professionals who are responsible for finding oil underground are known as geologists. Geologists can identify the most appropriate conditions for trapping oil such as reservoir rock, right source rock as well as entrapment. They test terrain and surface rocks using satellite images. A lot of technical methods are employed in this process. Sensitive gravity meters are used to gauge minor alterations in the gravitational field of ground to indicate flowing oil and sensitive magnetometers. They are also able to measure changes in the magnetic field of the ground because of flowing oil. After determining the perfect oil drilling site, the geologists survey the perimeter boundaries as they carry out environmental impact study. Concurrently, the oil company gets the appropriate titles and drilling rights to start the mining process. The land preparation is done by clearing trees and any other obstructions as access roads are built for easy movement of machinery. Oil extraction process requires water, therefore, if there is no water point close to the site, water wells are dug. Reserve pits are also dug for disposal of unwanted materials such as mud and rock shavings. The waste products from the oil site are later enclosed in a plastic to prevent environmental contamination. Several secondary holes are then dug to connect to the main hole. Just close to the main hole, a rectangle shaped pit known as a cellar is dug. The function of the cellar is to offer oil workers and their specialized machines and equipment access to the primary hole. The mining process is commenced by use of the rig from the starter hole. The crude oil extracted is in form of a liquid or semi-liquid. However tedious and long the procedure is, the oil extracted is used to distill various fossil fuels such as petrol, kerosene, diesel, motor oil, gasoline, and other petroleum products that provide energy.  Read more here
